Tourism Consortium Opportunities

Introduction

BTS has been appointed by Co-operative Development Scotland to identify tourism groupings across Scotland that would benefit from the consortium co-operative model.

There are over two hundred groups of tourism and hospitality operators working together throughout Scotland. Some promote destinations, while others are made up of like-minded people in the same sector (e.g. outdoor activities). Co-operation and collaboration between businesses can reduce risk and enhance economic, environmental and community benefits. Collaboration can also make it easier for the visitor to find information and select their experiences.

Examples of Tourism Cooperatives operating successfully in Scotland are:

Why a Cooperative?

Working together can also be quite hard (and many groups have struggled in recent years because of, for example, the absence of structure and lack of focus). Co-operative Development Scotland (CDS) a Scottish Enterprise subsidiary, working in partnership with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, supports the development of co-operatives across Scotland.  They proactively support the growth of key industries where collaboration is crucial to competitiveness and have developed a model form of business collaboration that helps independent businesses (of any size or type) to come together for a shared purpose - to sell together, buy together, market together, apply for funds together, tender together, share services or facilities. Evidence exists that the consortium co-operative model can offer cost savings, reduced risks, shared and enhanced business links and opportunities.

Members run the group on a shared and equal basis by, and for the benefit of, the members. More information about CDS and examples of consortium co-operatives is available on the CDS web site

Benefits of a Cooperative

Our role is to identify who might benefit from this collaborative approach. If you think your business and those you work with now could enhance the commercial benefits from collaboration, tell us. Or if you know of someone else who might benefit, please tell us.
